Before the Appointment
Gather your pet's health history
Your vet needs context to make good decisions. Before you arrive, pull together the following:
- Vaccination records and dates of last boosters
- Current medications, supplements and dosages
- Any recent changes in appetite, energy, weight or behavior
- Previous diagnoses or chronic conditions
- Results from previous blood work or lab tests
Kinselo keeps your pet's full medical history structured and searchable: vaccines, medications, vet visit notes, symptoms and expenses. Share a summary with your vet in seconds.
Write down your concerns
It's easy to forget what you wanted to ask once you're in the exam room. Write down every symptom or behavior change you've noticed, even if it seems minor. Note when it started and how often it happens. Bring the list with you.
Collect a fresh stool sample
For annual wellness exams, your vet will likely want a stool sample to check for intestinal parasites. Collect a small amount within 12 hours of the appointment and store it in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
What to Bring
- Vaccination records (especially Rabies certificate)
- List of current medications and supplements
- Your written list of concerns and questions
- Stool sample if requested
- Insurance card if applicable
- A recent photo if you're describing a skin condition or injury that may have changed
Questions to Ask at Every Annual Exam
Most pet owners leave the vet without asking the questions that matter most. Here are the ones worth asking every year:
- Is my pet's weight healthy for their age and breed?
- Are all vaccines up to date, and do you recommend any changes?
- Is there anything in their bloodwork or exam I should watch?
- What signs of illness should I watch for this year given their age?
- Are there any preventive measures I should start now?
After the Appointment
The visit is only useful if you remember what was said. Right after you leave, take 5 minutes to write down the key points: diagnosis, treatment plan, medications prescribed, and when to follow up. Log it in Kinselo so you have a clean record for next time.
Kinselo lets you log the full cost of each visit alongside what was discussed. Over time, this gives you a clear picture of your annual vet spending, useful for budgeting and for insurance claims.
Walk into every appointment prepared
Kinselo keeps your pet's full health record organized and ready to share with any vet, any time.
Get KinseloTips for Anxious Pets
Some dogs and cats find vet visits genuinely stressful. A few things that help:
- Bring a familiar blanket or toy that smells like home
- Avoid feeding your pet right before the appointment to reduce nausea
- Ask your vet about calming supplements or anxiety wraps if your pet has a history of severe stress
- For cats: keep the carrier out at home between visits so it becomes a familiar, safe space
- Reward your pet with a treat immediately after the exam, not during: you want them to associate the end of the visit with something positive
